In the animal kingdom the functional health of an animal’s fur coat plays a fundamental role in survival; while in humans the loss of hair is not similarly life-threatening, it is markedly detrimental to an individual’s quality of life and social standing. Pattern hair loss, or Androgenic Alopecia, is a systemic loss of hair primarily affecting the top of the scalp. This type of hair loss affects a large segment of the population; some estimates place the incidence of androgenic alopecia close to fifty percent in males after the age of 50. It is commonly believed that pattern hair loss is caused by genetics. However, the general population knows very little about the possible adverse effects that poor nutrition can have on the health of their hair.
Hair is a structurally complex protein filament that grows from within the layer of skin called the Dermis. Hair is composed of three distinct layers:
- CUTICLE: The cuticle is the outermost layer of the hair strand. It is built up from the superimposition of keratin-rich cells. The cuticle possesses no melanin, and it is translucent. The cuticle provides the hair shaft with structural integrity and protects the more delicate inner layers.
- CORTEX: This is the thickest layer of the hair shaft, and it is the layer that gives the hair its shape. Rounder cortexes make hair straight while oval shaped ones make hair curly. The cortex layer contains most of the melanin found in hair, and it is the cortex that gives hair its color.
- MEDULLA: The medulla is the nucleus of the hair shaft. This is the innermost and most frail structure of the hair shaft. Its exact role is not defined, but it works as the hair shaft’s marrow.
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT
The process which mediates hair growth, called the follicular cycle, is divided into three phases. These phases determine when a given strand of hair enters a state of growth, transition, or rest. The Anagen phase is the primary active growth stage of the cycle. In other words, it is during the Anagen phase that new hair grows and that is why this stage of the follicular cycle is extremely susceptible to nutritional deficiencies.
It is therefore essential that we have a clear understanding of the benefits of maintaining a balanced diet. A sound nutritional strategy will help us, not only prevent diseases but also stave off dermatological maladies such as androgenic alopecia.
We need to ensure that we introduce into our organisms all the nutrients, vitamins, and amino acids that it needs for proper functioning and tissue growth. Natural foods should be given priority over-processed foods with high caloric content but little nutritional value. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, cereals, meats, fish, healthy fats, should be staples of our diets.
There is ample evidence to suggest that deficient ingestion of essential nutrients is related to pattern hair loss.
- AMINO ACIDS: Keratin is a fibrous protein that forms primary structures of the hair shaft. Amino acids are essential to the body’s ability to synthesize proteins. By depriving our bodies of these essential amino acids, we are actively robing it of the natural ability to make keratin. Another highly significant amino acid is Methionine. This sulfur-based amino acid is an important constituent of most protein chains and an essential nutrient for the formation of healthy hair.
- IRON: Research has repeatedly suggested that hair loss is a common symptom of an iron deficiency. When the body is deficient in iron, hemoglobin productions significantly hindered. This deficiency results in not enough oxygen being transported around the body to cells for growth and repair. Iron is also crucial to hair follicle integrity and function. Therefore, low serum levels of iron can frequently lead to the hindrance of the hair growth cycle.
- ZINC: Recent clinical evidence promotes the idea that zinc supplementation is beneficial to hair growth. For example, some studies have shown that zinc is able to meaningfully inhibit retardation of hair growth regression caused by apoptosis of the hair follicle.
- BIOTIN: Biotin is the vitamin more commonly known as vitamin B8. Biotin is intimately tied to the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and amino acids. Biotin is also extremely important to the synthesis of enzymes related to cell division and regrowth. Biotin supplements are often prescribed to counteract hair loss.
